Species Lists and Distribution Maps for Mobile Devices:

Instructions for installing to Android devices:

The instructions below are for Android devices, including smartphones and tablets.

1. Select the dataset you want to download for installation. Datasets are packaged as zip files accessible through the following URLs:

algae.zip (21.0 MB; unzips to 65.5 MB, 2,603 files)
bryophytes.zip (35.2 MB; unzips to 145 MB, 4,212 files)
fungi.zip (35.9 MB; unzips to 110 MB, 12,224 files)
lichenized-fungi.zip (29.1 MB; unzips to 11 MB, 3,591 files)
vascular-plants.zip (230.1 MB; unzips to 1.23 GB, 17,741 files)

2. Copy the selected dataset to your device. There are several methods of doing this:

  1. Use a web browser on your device to access one of the above URLs and download the zip file directly to your device. You may want to be connected to the internet using wifi to avoid using data on your cell plan.
  2. Use a file explorer (there are many options on the Play Store) to move the downloaded file to a desired location on your device. This could be internal storage or a micro SD card. Then uncompress the zip file into that location.

  1. Use a web browser on your desktop computer to download the zip file to your computer.
  2. Uncompress the zip file to a folder on your computer.
  3. Connect your device to the computer and use a file manager (such as Windows explorer) to copy the extracted dataset files to a desired location on your device. Note that copying the extracted files may take a long time depending on your device.

  1. Use a web browser on your desktop computer to download the zip file to your computer.
  2. Connect your device to the computer and use a file explorer on your computer (such as Windows Explorer) to copy the zip file to a desired location on your device.
  3. On your device, use a file explorer or another app to uncompress the zip file.

3. Open the dataset index page in a browser on your device:

Dataset pages are simply a collection of HTML pages (using JavaScript) that can be viewed on your device through a web browser. Different devices impose different restrictions on whether and how local HTML files can be displayed in a web browser. It may take some experimentation to find a solution that works. Here are two suggestions:

  1. Use a file explorer on your device to locate the folder in which you placed the datset files. Then find the 'index.htm' file within that folder. Click that file and see if you are given the option to open it in a web browser on your device.
  2. Open a web browser and try entering one of the following URLs, modifying the URL as appropriate to reflect the location where you placed the dataset. Be sure to replace 'path/to/dataset' with the actual folder and subfolder names indicating the location of the dataset's index.htm file.

    Using internal storage:

    file:///storage/emulated/0/path/to/dataset/index.htm

    On a micro SD card:

    file:///sdcard/path/to/dataset/index.htm

    content://com.android.htmlfileprovider/sdcard/path/to/dataset/index.htm

    /mnt/sdcard-ext/path/to/dataset/index.htm

4. Bookmark the URL in your browser so you can easily refer back to it.
