Grasslands with shrubby cinquefoil and moist depressions on loamy soil. Festuca hallii may represent nothing more than Festuca campestris (rough fescue) with spikelets having aborted or immature florets such that the glumes appear enveloping of the adjacent floret cluster (Matt Lavin, 7 Feb 2025).
