On limestone just above contact with white quartzite. Mixed Douglas fir, limber pine, subalpine fir forest. Associated with Valeriana, Castilleja miniata, Paxistima myrsinites, Poa wheeleri and columbine. Plants dense to large tufts w/out creeping rhizomes, roots inconspicuously hairy; leaves glabrous; terminal spike gynaecandrous, perigynia ~3.3 mm long, glabrous, beak < .6 mm, pistillate scales narrow,dark,reddish to almost black. Phenology: Flowers & Fruits.
