On granite and granitic sand on steep canyon walls; growing with Pinus ponderosa, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Holodiscus discolor, Philadelphus lewisii, Selaginella douglasii, Micranthes occidentalis, Glossopetalon spinescens, Heuchera grossularifolia , and Cystopteris fragilis.
