Oregon: Grant County: Ochoco National Forest: Paulina Ranger District: Black Canyon Wilderness: From hwy 26 in Dayville drive the 42 S ~12 mi to Aldrich Gulch / Trailhead for Black Canyon. Park @ trailhead & take 820 (Black Cyn Tr) W 0.63 mi (as crow flies). Trail runs thru bottom edge of plot, a 31 in. dbh PSME ~ 10-15 ft from Black Cyn Ck. Plot center is above trail, lowermost edge is a 31 in. dbh PSME @ riparian edge. NOTE: No bridge across John Day River. It was about thigh deep when we forded it Aug 6. Wear light weight/ canvass hiking boots for multiple fordings of Black Cyn Ck - not possible to keep feet dry. Ck was ~ knee deep. Wear long pants & shirt because trail passes thru thick riparian veg (Ribes, Lonicera, Sambucus, Salix) in places.

Lower half of plot on gentle slope along canyon bottom, upper half is on steeper talus slope. Fire from 2002 did come down into canyon (I've walked 1st mi) but spared many trees. Slope 46%. Aspect 24°. Veg. cover: VACCI, SAMBU, LONIC, MANE2, PIPO (regen), LUPIN, CHAN9. VACCI, SAMBU, LONIC, MANE2, PIPO (regen), LUPIN, CHAN9.; PSME, PIPO, RIBES, PSME (tree regen), graminoids Fire prob. Explains low biomass esp of Bryoria. Moderate diversity dom by Hypims & Letvul on trees, Clafim & Pelmal on rocks. Other interesting lichens on rock. Substrate: PSME bole.
