Along the river bank with Salix glauca, S. alaxensis and Alnus incana. Common; growing 2.5 m tall; female, some shrubs starting to produce seed; collected for genetic research; was Salix pseudomonticola by Bruce A. Bennett; revised by George W. Argus Nov 2007 to Salix barclayi best fit but; revised by George W. Argus mar; 2010 to Salix barclayi x richardsonii ferruginous hairs are present with prominant stipules; the characters that definitely exclude Salix pseudomonticola are: pistillate flowering branchlet length and stigma lobe length; you can see from the table that stipule length in the two species is virtually the same; the presence of a few ferruginous hairs on the adaxial surface of some of the leaves, however, complicates the picture; these could well come from Salix pseudomonticola or Salix richardsonii; i have seen (and collected) a lot of specimens in the alaska range that i suspect are the cross Salix barclayi x Salix richardsonii, but it is very difficult to prove hybridization without doubt; leaf adax surface with ferruginous hairs; does not fit Salix barclayii; leaf l/w 1.5; pistillate flowering branchlet 8-9.4 mm; no fit Salix psmo or Salix richardsonii; stipe 1.2-1.4 mm; style 0.6 mm; stigma lobes 0.55.
