Open soil bluff above wetland, northwest-facing growing with Salix polaris, Empetrum nigrum, and Artemisia norvegica ssp. saxatilis. Only place seen. The plant in the scan labelled Botasn1 is very peculiar and doesn't fit any species very well. It might be B. ascendens, but neither the pinnae nor the sporophore branches are distinctly ascending, and the sporophore branches are more pronounced than is usual in B. ascendens. Also the sporophore stalk is longer than I would expect in ascendens. I don't think the pinnae margins are sufficiently crenate to be B. crenulatum, but if it was in the lower 48, that would be my guess. It actually has more of the appearance of B. tunux and I think that has to be considered a possibility. Botasn1 has the greatest potential of being something other than B. lunaria or B. minganense. That site should definitely be revisited and searched for more specimens of the same appearance with a few plants sent to me fresh for genetic analysis. - Don Farrar March 25, 2003.
