Sandy roadside rim by sidewalk, next to landscaped strip of construction zone. Ca. 10 scattered plants along 1 km of Brunette Avenue; plants of this variety grown for the oily seeds (perilla oil), not for the leaves (shiso) in Asian cuisine which is var. crispa, which often has purple colouration; plants show up along Brunette in warm summers, but always fail to even form flower buds before cold weather sets in.
