With several grasses, Juncus and assorted weeds. Abundant. Plants tall, stout, with very broad leaves and stems; rhizome shortly creeping but well-developed. Perianth deep purple, the segments oblanceolate (not cuneate as in S. bellum), emarginate-aristulate; filament column deep purple and without yellow blotch surrounding base; sts branched. Common with S. bellun but without apparent intergrades, although both species flowering at same time and apparently being worked by the same solitary bees. Photos made, buds and live plants collected. CYTOLOGICAL VOUCHER: Plants similar to this (large purple fls with oblanceolate perianth segments) are n = 32. Phenology: Flowers.
