In understorey of mixed conifer forest, with Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, Abies grandis, Abies procera, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Rosa gymnocarpa, Pteridium aquilinum, Senecio triangularis and Aster sp.; gentle, west-northwest facing slope with shallow, sandy loam soils derived from granite. Scattered; sprawling, deciduous shrub to 0.5 m high; leaves medium green above, paler beneath; berries oval, up to 2 cm long, dark red, covered with very sharp prickles; collection type: seed, voucher.
