Brushy, shaded understory of mature Pseudotsuga menziesii forest, with some Arbutus menziesii; understory of Gaultheria shallon, Vaccinium parviflorum, Ilex aquifolium, Hedera helix, and other native and introduced shrubs. Flowers pistillate; petals 4, deep maroon, spreading; leaves deep glossy green, speckled with yellow; stems semi-woody, green and weak, to 1.5 meters tall, forming dense patch ca. 3 meters diameter in forest shade, apparently naturalized.
