On former site of mixed conifer and broadleaf forest; forest cover killed by 2002 Biscuit Fire with tree and shrub layer regenerating; associated species include Pinus ponderosa, Quercus kelloggii, Quercus chrysolepis, Cornus nuttallii, Umbellularia californica, Frangula californica ssp. californica, Arctostaphylos canescens, Pteridium aquilinum, Toxicodendron diversilobum, Lonicera hispidula, Monardella villosa, Balsamorhiza sagittata, Iris innominata and Viola lobata; growing in non-serpentine soil (sedimentary/slate) on gentle southwest facing slope. Locally common; herbaceous perennial covered with dense soft hairs, spreading by rhizomes; upright stems pale green with terminal racemes of flowers; flowers pale yellow, most open except at tip.
