Moderate to steep, stony mid- to upper slopes, open to partly shaded, southeasterly, easterly, and northeasterly facing aspects, convexities, undulating gravelly soil pockets and ledges in gravelly, serpentinic and ultramafic soils and outcrops. Associated taxa: Festuca idahoensis, Pinus jeffreyi, Calocedrus decurens, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Quercus vacciniafolia, Quercus garryiana breweri, Thuja plicata, Melica geyeri, Polystichum munitum, Poa piperi, Senecio hesperius, Umbellularia californica, Zygadenus venosus, Microseris howellii. Very few ramets had fruiting or dried staminate scapes (<1% in general), appearing to spread locally by slender rhizomes or possibly by seed from hastily detached, ephemeral scapes (not observed); of 125 ramets counted in one transect, 2 were reproductive; distribution is clumped in irregular, mosaic patterned habitats of vernally moist to xeric woodland/savanna and outcrop edges; common to this aspect of Woodcock Mountain; rough estimate of ramet (eg. plant) numbers in this about 38 acre population: 11,000 ;.
