In open canopy conifer forest; associates include Abies grandis, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Holodiscus discolor, Acer glabrum var. douglasii, Ribes cruentum, Ribes sanguineum, Rosa gymnocarpa, Quercus sadleriana, Rubus parviflorus, Paxistima myrsinites, Berberis nervosa, Symphoricarpos mollis, Achlys tryphylla, Vancouveria hexandra and Asarum sp.; steep, north-northwest facing slopes with shallow, rocky soils derived from the Applegate Metasediment. Scattered shrub; a low, deciduous shrub, to 3 dm high and spreading widely; berries white; stems maroon-brown.
