Growing in moist places; swampy ground. Camas Lily; 12 to 18 inches; [blooms in] April and May; It used to cover whole fields and was an important source of food for the Indians. Tribal wars were fought over the possession of these fields. The roots were roasted and are the best wild substitute for bread. The early explorers were thankful to have it as a source of food and it played an important part in their diet. Phenology: flowering.
