On rocks in the subtidal zone to a depth of 5 fathoms. Thallus up to 35 cm high, brownish red to deep red in colour, with a few main axes and numerous shorter laterals tending to lie in one plane. All orders of branching terete, generally 3-5 mm in diameter but frequently up to 5 mm in main branches and at base. Thallus cartilaginous.
